Southwest Airlines Efficiency

June 25th, 2008

I recently flew Southwest Airlines instead of my normal Delta.  I was impressed by their efficiency.  Arriving planes would pull up to the gate shortly before scheduled departure rather than sitting at the gate for hours unused.

Unlike other airlines that are now charging for baggage and drinks, Southwest still provides all for free.

Overall I was impressed with the service they provided and my flights were all on time or early.  Staff was cordial and even humorous at times.  I will definitely consider Southwest in the future.

Odyssey Charter School Utah Continued

June 10th, 2008

So what is the latest regarding Odyssey Charter School in American Fork Utah?  I am still going through the budget and will save the finding there for another upcoming post.

It seems though Founders and Honorary Founders continue to bail.  Another bad sign.

One issue recently raised is the proposed desire of the Administration and Board to make all Junior High teachers generalists versus subject experts.  So instead of having a trained teacher in Science, Math, English, etc., all teachers will be expected to teach in any of the subjects.

My expectation is this will have a negative impact on a Junior High system that is already struggling to attract students.  My personal impression is that they feel the week long expensive trip to Greece will make up for this and other weaknesses in the Junior High program.  Personally, I question that line of thinking.

See previous posts on Odyssey Charter School regarding their budget and policies.

Chevy Volt

June 6th, 2008

GM has released more details on its concept vehicle named the Chevy Volt.  The vehicle uses an interesting mix of gas and electric power.

The actual vehicle itself is powered by a set of powerful lithium ion batteries.  These batteries, when fully charged, can go up to 40 miles.  To get around the problem of needed to stop and recharge the batteries, the Volt has a gas engine that’s sole purpose is to run a generator recharging the batteries.  As such this gas generator can run at the most efficient rpms to charge the batteries.  It will operate at a standard rpm versus increasing and decreasing.

Chevy says the vehicle will be able to go up to 400 miles between gas fillups and get up to 150 miles per gallon.  The anticipate the Volt will be available by 2010.

For more info, see the Chevy Volt site here.

Odyssey Charter School American Fork Utah Budget Time

May 29th, 2008

It is that time of year when the Administration at Odyssey Charter School in American Fork is submitting their budget.  At first glance, the proposed budget seems to increase already heavy administration costs considerably.

I need to do some further research and get some clarification as to some of the Administrative related numbers but luckily the Supreme Court in Utah just made that easier with their ruling regarding Sandy City and the Salt Lake Tribune.

In comparing Odyssey Charters Schools budget with that of Alpine School District, it looks like the Charter Schools spends a much higher percentage on administrative staff than Alpine School District.  Interestingly enough, based on a quick glance, it looks like Odyssey spends more actual dollars on administrative staff than Alpine School District does for similar jobs.  This is interesting as Alpine School District has thousands of kids versus the 450 or so at Odyssey.   Then consider that a parent at Odyssey is asked to put in 40 volunteer hours to help provide more resources for their child’s education.

Another interesting area was that of extra curricular activities.  Alpine shows spending roughly $36,000 on sports teams, etc.  This money benefits hundreds of students who participate in these activities.  Odyssey on the other hand does not have sports teams but according to my understanding, spent over $18,500 to send 10 or so kids and their chaperone’s to Rome this year for a week (next year it will be $30,000 for 30 kids).   What makes it even worse is that based on what I know, the 8th grade (the ones that took this trip), do not bring in enough revenue through State income to cover the cost of their grade to start with (teachers, supplies, activities, etc).  As a result, this trip to Rome for this small number of students was taken at the expense of the other 400+ students at the school.  This could have paid for multiple field trips, programs, etc. benefiting the student body as a whole.

More to come on this once the budget is passed and my requests regarding some of the numbers is responded to.

Sprint Takes Big Loss

May 15th, 2008

Sprint lost millions of customers and millions of dollars in their latest financial report.  The CEO has asked investors to be patient as they work on the turnaround.

It will be interesting to see if they can actually turn the ship around quick enough to not have some long term damage.

Odyssey Charter School and Charters Schools in General

May 14th, 2008

I thought it might be a good time to do a follow up to a previous post on Odyssey Charter School in American Fork Utah.  Having had personal experience at Odyssey Charter School and knowing parents whose students attend Mountainville Academy and Renaissance, it has been interesting to see what is happening in the Charter School area.  As parent prepare to choose where their children will attend School next year, I think a few tidbits I have learned in the last three years may help them not to make the same mistakes we did.

Why does it matter if I choose the wrong school from the start?  Many of these schools have long waiting lists now to get in.  Some, like Mountainville have very long waiting lists in all grades currently.   My understanding is others have yet to hit full enrollment.  I think this is one of the first questions a parent should ask any Charter School.  The fact a number of schools have full enrollment and waiting lists in all grades should be one factor indicating the current and past parents opinion of the school.

It also may not be easy to move a child from one to the other if you commit to attend one and then get admitted to another shortly after.  The State Legislature has made this type of action harder this year.  As a result, you want to choose wisely the first time.

Is the school in the black or red?  The financial state of the school should be considered.  Apparently some of the Directors and other staff hired at these schools do not know how to read a financial statement.  As a result it is tough to not only keep within your budget but understand the best use of the funds available.

What is the turnover rate of enrolled families and why?  This relates to the above information regarding enrollment.  If families are happy with the experience, the waiting lists will continue to grow as current families will not be leaving.  Those schools that are easier to get into may be this way because families are leaving the school due to poor teaching, poor administration, etc…

As an example, I have witnessed more than one Committee Chair and Past or Present General Board members leave Odyssey after their experience.   These were not cases where the individual moved from the area but rather took their kids to another local school.  It would seem these parents should be the schools strongest advocates having been willing to take on the biggest volunteer jobs.  These types of departures should be especially concerning to others as these parents have the strongest working knowledge of what is in fact happening within the school.  They also may be the ones that can provide the most accurate portrayal of issues with Staff and Administration.

Can the Board hire and keep good staff?  A number of schools have recently lost their Director.  Whether this was related to the Board inviting the Director to leave or the Director doing so on their own I don not know.  Some schools have gone through multiple Business Managers in short periods of time.  Some have had issues with teacher turnover.  All of these should be considered.  Odyssey has a printout available by the front desk that notes whether a charter school is good or not.  One of these factors is the Board relationship with the Director.  I think parents should ask about this.  My experience tells me you may find a broad difference in answers board members will give.

Personally, would I choose Odyssey Charter School again today based on my experience with some current Board members and the current Administration?  No, I would definitely look at one of the many other options in the area.  I personally do not have any confidence in the current Director, some members of his staff, and some members of the Board to step up and make the necessary changes.

Ebay, Amazon, and Junk

May 10th, 2008

Let me preface this post upfront that this is purely my opinion based on my own experience.

While Ebay has some good deals, it seems to me there is also a lot of junk for sale there.  You can find inexpensive cell phone accessories but it seems they are generally pieces of junk or maybe counterfeit OEM.  Recent experience leads me to believe a number of these same companies that have been using Ebay for years to sell what I think of as substandard products have since joined Amazon’s marketplace.

I am curious as to why Amazon has allowed this junk to become related to its name.  I guess it is another example of the almighty dollar being the deciding factor.

Mothers Day Phone Specials

May 5th, 2008

If you are looking to buy a new phone, Mothers Day may be a good time to look.

There are a number of service providers and companies offering specials such as buy one get one free or waived activation fees.  Costco for instance is offering the same deal to qualified upgrades as they are to new activatiions as well as waiving the activation fees and providing a free accessory bundle.
